This week’s topic brings memories to Freedom Hub cohost Frohman, whose congressman-boss back in the early 90s was a lawyer trying to make his mark in health reform by targeting unscrupulous Medicare suppliers of “Durable Medical Equipment”. We even cosponsored a bill to give seniors more choices among nursing homes. Of course, avoiding getting ripped off by shoddy equipment - or ensuring institutional choices - makes up only a portion of the stress when dealing with the care of an elderly relative.

With the retirement of the huge baby boomer cohort, families are trying to keep a parent safe, protect a caregiver’s back, or make a house function before a crisis blows it up. What about autonomy, informed decisions, and practical workarounds when the system gets slippery? Ms. Sell founded Harmony Home Medical Supply and built it around education first, not warehouse-style transactions.

Aging in place is one of the most important goals in caring for seniors with declining health. That means helping them be safe at home, keep their mobility, and avoid moving into institutional skilled care. Unfortunately, families often don’t take action until it’s too late. Many can avoid costly changes with simply a safer bathroom layout and transfer systems,
a better bed, or other home changes. Sure, there are costs involved, yet they are usually many times less than the consequence of not preparing.

Erica Sell is working to shift the paradigm by making shopping for medical equipment feel empowering instead of depressing. Caregiving is challenging enough. Getting the right equipment should not be. Erica will talk about what Medicare typically covers, what it does not cover, how reimbursement can work, and why the system often forces families to wait
until there’s a crisis.

Many grandparents want to stay in their homes as long as possible—but most families only begin planning after a medical crisis forces the issue. Growing up around the medical equipment industry—and experiencing her own family emergency—led Erica to create a different approach: helping families understand all their options…their best options… rather than limiting them to what insurance covers.
