Did you know that the model for the church that you and I attend weekly gets its pattern and foundation from the Tabernacle in the Wilderness. In this structure of the Tabernacle there are 3 compartments which is a three in one house of worship. But it's in the middle compartment that teaches us about fellowship with the Father and with each other. It can be easily seen through two pieces of furniture in the middle compartment. The Menorah gives light to illuminate the bread on the table of showbread. These two pieces of furniture reveal to us how we have fellowship with the Father and each other. In our last session, we saw that the 1st Torah Portion called ‘B’reshiyt’, layed the foundation of the 1st 2 chapters of the ‘New Testament, ‘Matthew chapter 1 and 2. Therefore, lets continue on with the next Torah Portion beginning in Genesis chapter 7, through Genesis chapter 11. In this Torah Portion, The Book of Genesis introduces us to a new Biblical character named: ‘Noah’, or in Hebrew: ‘Noach’. Just as we’re introduced to ‘Noah’ in this week’s Torah Portion, we’re introduced to a new character in this week’s corresponding Gospel reading of Matthew 3 and 4, by the name, in Hebrew: Yochanon HaMitvil, or John the Baptist. As we’ll see, Matthew 3 and 4, will line up, and have its foundation, in this week’s Torah Portion, ‘Noach’. Just as Noah was a ‘Preacher of Righteousness’ of his day, in Matthew 3 and 4, we find that John the Baptist is also known as a ‘Preacher of Righteousness’!

Jesus told Nicodemus in John chapter 3 that ‘You Must Be Born Again’! But Jesus or the writers of the Apostolic Scriptures did not invent the term ‘Born-Again.’ Rather it was a Rabbinic term for a Gentile who had entered the faith of the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. As a sign of that faith, it involved a full body immersion into a ‘Mikvah’, i.e. (Baptism). Through the process of immersion, the Gentile was regarded as being re-created or ‘Born-Again’. But the term ‘Born-Again’ did not begin in the 1st Century, this Rabbinic term was accredited to ‘Noah’ in this Weeks Torah Portion ‘Noach’! Just as the message of Noah was ‘Repent, have faith and be saved’, John The Baptist preached the same message in Matthew 3 and 4: ‘Repent, have faith and be saved’! And just as the faithful believer of Noah’s day entered the Ark of Salvation and was Immersed, John was standing on the banks of the Jordan River saying to the faithful believers of the 1st Century: ‘Repent and enter into the Kingdom, meet the real Ark of Salvation, ‘Yeshua Jesus’, be Immersed in the waters as Noah did, and be ‘Born Again’!

It’s evident in this week’s reading of ‘The Sermon on The Mount’, that Jesus is continuing in this model of 1st Century Hebraic discipleship training, as it is written for us in the New Testament, in the Gospel of Luke chapter 6 verse 40, where Jesus says: “Every disciple when fully trained will be like his teacher”.
According to the Words of Jesus, it’s clear that the goal of Biblical Discipleship is, when the disciple was fully trained, he became the Teacher and passed on the teaching to his own disciples, who in turn, when his Disciple were fully trained, became Teachers and raised up disciples of their own.
But where did this method of Discipleship begin, and who did it begin with? Well, in first century Midrashic literature, we find that our father Abraham gets the credit for giving us the design of true Discipleship. He’s also accredited as beginning the structure of the first Bible School called in Hebrew: ‘Yeshiva' which simply means: ‘A Scholarly Bible School for Discipleship’.
Therefore if ‘The Sermon on the Mount’ is Jesus’ Scholarly Bible School for Discipleship, it makes us ask the question, is Jesus continuing in the Bible School System that was founded by our father Abraham, or is He doing something brand new? The only way to know for sure, is to look back to this week’s Torah Portion where we’re introduced to our father Abraham.

IT’s A YESHIVA!!! Traditionally, the section of Scripture from Matthew chapter 5 verse 1, through Matthew chapter 7 verse 29, has been called "the Sermon on the Mount," due to the physical location of Jesus when He spoke. Unfortunately, this title misses the point of His teaching, Matthew chapter 5 through chapter 7, is actually Jesus’ commentary on how His Disciple are to walk out the Commandments of God. Biblically, if you want a good commentary of the first five Books of the Bible, you don’t have to look any farther, than Jesus’ “Sermon on the Mount”!
But in the Sermon on The Mount, Jesus wasn’t seeking large numbers for His congregation. In Matthew chapter 5 through 7, Jesus was seeking disciples. Therefore Discipleship is at the very heart of ‘The Sermon on The Mount’.
We’ll see in this series, that Matthew’s Gospel account of ‘The Sermon on The Mount’, is truly written in the traditional ‘Yeshiva’ (Scholarly Bible School for Discipleship) style of the 1st Century Sages.
